What they needed support with
Frank Bruno did not need PR to be projected. The challenge was different: keeping a retired world champion’s public profile current, meaningful and connected to work that matters now, rather than resting on nostalgia.
How we delivered
Magnify PR has supported that shift by keeping the focus on Frank’s life beyond the ring: his books, his broadcast work, his public appearances and, at the centre of it, the Frank Bruno Foundation and its campaigning around mental health. Set up in 2017, the Foundation has become the anchor of Frank’s post-retirement story. Its Round By Round programme uses wellbeing and non-contact boxing, supported by wrap-around care, to help people facing or recovering from mental ill-health. That profile has been sustained through national media, books and documentary work, with Magnify PR founder Nick Owens writing Let Me Be Frank and 60 Years A Fighter, and currently working with Frank on his next book, due this Christmas, alongside projects including Sky’s Bruno v Tyson and Amazon Prime’s Four Kings.
What the results were
Since its centre opened in 2020, the Foundation has supported more than 1,000 men and women, giving Frank’s profile a measurable community impact alongside national visibility. That impact has drawn recognition at the highest levels, including a visit from Mental Health Minister Maria Caulfield and a visit from the Duke of Gloucester, moments that helped reposition Frank from former world heavyweight champion to credible campaigner using his own experience to challenge stigma. The result is a post-retirement profile built to last: a sporting icon whose public story has kept moving forward, from champion to author, campaigner, charity founder and one of the most trusted national voices on mental health.
